Join the 21cGL wiki
Because we will be using the same usernames to join another wiki for our global project, you need to use your first name, last initial, and school abbreviation.
It should look like this firstnamelastinitial_isa; for example Ms. Moorman's username would be honorm_isa

Sign in to your Diigo (social bookmarking) account
Same username as above; password is your school login (ID number)
Practice opening everything in a new tab - just hit "control" when you click!



This Week's Task

In preparation for our participation in the NetGenEd Project, each pair of students will research one of the technology trends outlined in the 2011 Horizon Report. Students will learn research techniques, practice advanced Internet search strategies, begin tagging and sharing resources using social bookmarking, and collaboratively compose a page on our class wiki with information about their topic. By the end of the week, students will be ready to teach their classmates about their technology trend and its future impact on education.

Step One - Start with the 2011 Horizon Report

  1. Read the overview of your technology trend described in the 2011 Horizon Report (use the links in the left-hand column above to go straight to your technology trend page on the Horizon Report wiki). If there are words you don't know as you read, stop to look them up.
  2. Highlight the main idea of the page and save it as the description when you save the page to Diigo.
  3. Use Diigo to add highlighting, sticky notes and comments as you read.
  4. Share the page to our 21GlobalLeadership group using the standard tag for your topic plus other key words you think will be helpful.
  5. Begin to notice key words related to your technology trend. Record these on your wiki page (follow the links in the right-hand column above).
  6. Go back to the Horizon Report and follow the links to information about your technology "In Practice" - read to find out more about your topic.
  7. Highlight, comment, tag, and save these pages to Diigo - share to the 21cGL group.
  8. Continue to add key words to your wiki page.
  9. Follow the links on the Horizon Report under "For Further Reading." Repeat the steps from above.
  10. You should now have at least 7 items in your Diigo "basket"!

Step Two - Follow the Horizon Report Footprints

  1. Go back to the page on the Horizon Report for your technology trend (see chart above)
  2. Follow the link at the top of the page to the list of sites tagged on Delicious (another social bookmarking service, like Diigo)
  3. Read at least 3 articles from the list (more if you have time) and interact with them like we did yesterday
  4. HIghlight, comment, sticky note, describe, tag, save, and share to our group!
  5. You should now have at least 10 items in your Diigo "basket" :)

Step Three - Review your Progress on the Horizon Report Research

Reminder: Use tabbed browsing as you follow the steps on this checklist
  1. Log in to your Diigo account and check your work in "My Library"
  2. First, make sure you have at least 10 items - your Horizon Report page, 3 "In Practice" examples, 3 "For Further Reading" articles, and 3 (or more) articles from the Delicious list linked off the top of the Horizon Report page
  3. If you don't have all 10 of these, go back to the directions for Step One (Monday) and Step Two (Tuesday)
  4. Next, check for evidence of active reading: Does every item in your Diigo library have at least a description, an annotation (comment or sticky note), and multiple tags? Keenan's library so far is a good example; so is Haley's.
  5. Double check your tags - are you using the "standard tag" for your technology trend? (Those are spelled out to the RIGHT of your name in the table above. Next week we'll talk about why we need standard tags, it's very important if we are going to help organize the world's information as we saw in the Information R/evolution video.)
  6. Now, make sure you've shared all your items to the 21cGL group. You can do this from your library by clicking on "Edit" and then "Share to a Group."
BONUS: Continue reading, saving, and sharing resources from the delicious list for your topic. OR Use Diigo as a search engine and research additional sites others have thought were worth sharing to the community.

Step Four - Synthesize and Summarize

  1. Sit with the other students who have been researching the same technology trend
  2. Log in to the class wiki and your Diigo libraries
  3. Go to the page on our class wiki for your technology topic (linked from the RIGHT hand column of this chart)
  4. Collaboratively write one or two paragraphs that describe and explain your technology trend
    FIRST read these important Do's and Don'ts:
    • DO take turns editing the page; DON'T try to edit at the same time or you will lose your work
    • DO explain your technology in your own words; DON'T quote directly from your sources
    • DO cite your information by adding references; DON'T skip this step!

Adding References: Step-By-Step Process

Each bit of information you've included on your wiki page needs to be cited using a ref tag for each source
  1. You need 2 tabs open: the wiki page you are editing and the website of your source
  2. Wiki page: Click Edit, put your cursor at the end of the information you are getting ready to cite, and type ref_tag.jpg
  3. Copy and paste or type the title of your source in between the 2 ref tags
  4. Source website: Copy the URL from the address bar at the top of your browser
  5. Wiki page: Highlight the title, click Link, select External Link, paste the URL you copied, and click Add Link
  6. Save your edit and check to see that a footnote appears where you inserted the ref tags
  7. Click on the footnote and make sure the title of the source appears correctly with a working hyperlink
  8. That's it!
